Configuring Permanent Git Credential Storage on Enterprise Linux

When Git constantly prompts for authentication credentials during pull and push operations over HTTPS, you can configure the built-in credential helper to store credentials persistently.

Standard Credential Helper (store)

Run the following command to enable global credential storage:

git config --global credential.helper store

The next time you perform a Git operation, enter your username and Personal Access Token (or password). Git will write these credentials to standard unencrypted storage in ~/.git-credentials and reuse them automatically for subsequent commands.

Temporary In-Memory Caching

If storing credentials on disk violates local security policies, configure Git to cache credentials temporarily in memory instead:

SSH Key Authentication Alternative

For Enterprise Linux environments, switching from HTTPS to SSH key authentication provides long-term security without requiring plaintext credential files.
